Sullivan Outlasts Westchester 84-67

Generals shake off sloppy first half to win 5th straight...

Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. - Sullivan took to the court Thursday having not played in nine days and for most of the first half the Generals struggled to find that rhythm that has often propelled them to early leads this season.

Generals would grab a short lived 10-4 lead at the 13:30 mark with Tyiek Rivers doing some early damage finding his way to the rim while also nocking down a handful of foul shots. Nearly five minutes later Westchester was back in the mix knotting the game a 19-19 with 8 minutes left in the half.

The Generals and Vikings would trade baskets for the remainder of the first half with Westchester beating the buzzer on a layup as the half expired to make the score 31-31.

A strong second half fueled by strong defensive efforts and sophomore guard Kevin Smith taking the ball to the basket opened up plenty of scoring options for the Generals. Sullivan would quickly open up a 10 point lead and kept the visitors at bay before pulling away for a 84-67 final.

Smith would lead the way for Sullivan with 24 points and 7 rebounds, Rivers added 17 points while Arafat Shaibu had a strong game in the paint scoring 12 points while grabbing 13 boards. As a team, Sullivan also shot an impressive 18 of 19 from the foul line on the evening as they improved to 8-3 (2-0 MHC). Westchester drops to 8-4 (2-2 MHC).

Generals are back in action on Sunday afternoon as they host CCBC-Catonsville at 2pm with the JV program hosting Monroe College JV at 4pm.
