Loch Sheldrake, NY -Â Anchored by a double-double from sophomore forward Arafat Shaibu, the Sullivan Generals men's basketball team was able to withstand a tough test from Monroe Community College Friday night, and walked out of Paul Gerry Fieldhouse with an 87-73 win.
The Generals improved to 6-3 on the year, while the Tribunes dropped to 5-4.
Full-court pressure from the Tribunes forced the Generals into early turnovers, creating transition baskets and an early deficit for the Generals.
Hot-shooting from
Kevin Smith kept the Generals close, and a deep three-pointer from the left wing from Smith tied the game at 8-8.
Both teams traded buckets before
Arafat Shaibu cut the Tribunes lead to 22-20 with a jump hook from the right block and another three ball from Smith gave the Generals their first lead of the Game at 23-22.
The Tribunes however, would go on a 7-0 run and take a 29-23 lead with just over seven minutes to go in the first half, before Sullivan answered with a 9-2 run of their own, capped by yet another three from Smith. This three-pointer from Smith would give the Generals a 32-31 lead, a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
From that point, it became The Shaibu Show. The Generals big man would go on a 10-0 run by himself, highlighted by two big dunks, to extend the Generals lead to 42-31 before heading into halftime with a 46-36 lead.
Freshman Ty Rivers would get the Generals going in the second half with a jumper from the left wing and then a three pointer to cap an 8-0 run by the Generals to start the second half.
The Generals would extend their lead to 16, their largest lead of the night, with just over ten minutes left in the game, before Majesty Brandon hit a deep three pointer to cut the Generals lead to 69-56.
The Tribunes would never get closer than ten points, thanks in large part to
Terrin Roy. Roy came off the bench and skied for a tip-in to extend the Generals lead to 12, before coming up with steals on back to back possessions to give the Generals a 78-65 lead.
The Generals and Tribunes would trade buckets late, but Sullivan would maintain their comfortable lead till the end, and Shaibu's two free throws with 34 seconds left sealed the Generals 87-73 win.
Shaibu finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds, while Smith led the Generals with 24 points.
Majesty Brandon led all scorers with 25 points. Keith King logged 21 points on 10-19 shooting.
The Generals are back in action Tuesday night as they host Rockland Community College at Paul Gerry Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
