Danville, IL (3/17/2022) - [Quarterfinal Round of NJCAA DII Men's Basketball National Tournament] The #3 seed Sullivan Generals secure the victory over Cecil College (MD), 90-79. The #3 Generals move on to play in the semi-final round on Friday (3/18) at 8:30pm CT (9:30pm ET). Sullivan will the #2 seed Davidson-Davie Community College (NC) in the semi-finals of the National Tournament [final four].
The Generals struggled offensively in the first half and went into the half down five, 39-44. The second half was a different story with the Generals generating easy offense through their defense; Sullivan opened the second half with four straight stops against Cecil leading to a 9-0 run. The second half Sullivan held Cecil to 35 points while scoring 51 points of their own. Sullivan secured the victory to advance to the next round, 90-79.
Sullivan was led with all five starters scoring in double figures.
Jalen Reneau led the Generals with a team high 21 points on 8-13 from the floor and 3-5 from three; Jalen also had 5 assists and 3 rebounds.Â
Kareem Welch was right behind Jalen with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Sam DeSouza shot 8-11 from the floor to finish with 17 points and 4 rebounds.Â
Jay Alvarez added in 14 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals while
Jarell White finished with 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. The rest of the Generals scoring came from
Daivel Jackson with 6 points and 7 rebounds and J.Minto (2).
Cecil College (MD) was led by a game high from Khalid Gates with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Marion Lewis chipped in with 10 points and Darell Johnson had 9 points; the rest of their scoring came from D.Carrington (8), K.Frager (6), H.Corbin (5), J.Valeus (5), P.Gyan (2), N.Benjamin (2), and J.Jones (1).Â
The #3 seed Sullivan Generals move on to the third round semi-finals (final four teams) in the NJCAA DII National Championship. Sullivan will play Friday (3/18) at 8:30pm CT (9:30pm ET). The Generals play the #2 seeded, Davidson-Davie Community College (NC), who beat #7 seeded Henry Ford Community College.
