Box Score 2 Loch Sheldrake, NY- SUNY Sullivan Women's Basketball opened this past weekend hosting the Tip Off Classic at the Paul Gerry
Fieldhouse. They lost a tough one on Saturday (11/2) to Montgomery College and got a nice win on Sunday (11/3) against Raritan Valley.
The Lady Generals started the 2019-2020 Season facing off with the Raptors of Montgomery College. The first quarter set the tone that this game would be an all-out battle with the Generals edging out the Raptors 16-15. The tight back and forth continued throughout the second quarter with the Raptors taking the lead going into halftime up, 33-32. The first half saw the Lady Generals holding their opponent to 0-5 from beyond the arc; while the Generals were able to shoot 6-16 (37%) from three to keep them in the game. After halftime the Generals made a push to show they can score inside going 11-20 from the field and only shooting 1-4 from three. Montgomery struggled to score on pace with the Lady Generals but hit a few threes (3-5) to keep the game close. After three quarters Sullivan led, 61-56. The fourth quarter and beyond would prove to be a dramatic finish to the Lady Generals opening night; seeing 7 lead changes and 4 ties during the 10 minutes of action. This all boiled down to a single possession game with two minutes to play. With 0:32 left on the clock the Raptors took the lead, 74-73, on two made free throws but quickly it was tied again, 74-74, after Sullivan made 1 of 2 free throws. The final 20 seconds proved to be full of entertainment with everything coming down to the final second and beyond. The Raptors took a last chance shot with time expired and everyone on the edge of their seat…. A controversial call by the refs stated the shot got off in time and ended the game with Sullivan down, 76-74. Sullivan Lady Generals, the coaching staff, and fans were in total disbelief that the shot counted and the place erupted with yelling to review the film. To the team and fans dismay there is no film review allowed and the decision landed solely on the refs and their ability to make the call. Montgomery was led by Mariah Ellis with 25, Nusaibah Rashad with 17, and Jordan Odom chipping in 14. Sullivan was led by
Heather Caroccia and
Johnahyah Curry both scoring 17 and pulling in 5 rebounds,
Kanayah Britt also had 5 rebounds and chipped in with 10 points. Other Lady General scoring came from A.Buchanan (9), T. Delaney (8), K.Britt (6), B.Avery (4), H.Harris (2), and J.Kelly (1).
Sunday (11/3) saw the Lady Generals squaring off with Raritan Valley in which the Generals left no doubt they were the clear winners. The Lady Generals ended the first quarter up, 24-14, and maintained the 10 point lead going into the half up, 43-33. The second half showed Sullivan turning up the defense and improving on their already impressive offensive night. After three quarters the Generals had a commanding lead, 69-53. They further extended their lead to 24 ending the day with a victory, 91-67.
Traynise Delaney led all scorers with 25 and chipped in 8 rebounds.
Heather Caroccia continued to show her offensive ability scoring double figures for a second night, ending with 19 points and 5 rebounds. J.Curry, A.Buchanan, & H.Harris were right behind with 9 apiece; B.Avery and K.Britt had 8 rebounds to go with 6 points and 7 points, respectively. Other scoring came from K.Britt (5), J.Kelly (5), and I.Lee (4). Raritan Valley was led by Precious Allah (22), Morenike Akinrefon (13), Ali McGrath (12), and Eumani Hollis with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Sullivan Women's Basketball team is back in action Saturday, 11/9, when they host Jamestown CC. The Lady Generals tip-off that game at 2:00pm on the campus of SUNY Sullivan in the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse.
