Sullivan Drops Overtime Thriller to Lackawanna

Delaney and Pickett Have Career Nights

Loch Sheldrake, NY- A career-high 36 points from Traynise Delaney was not enough to overcome Lackawanna's hot shooting Friday night, as the Sullivan Generals women's basketball team dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Lackawanna, 90-89.

The Generals dropped to 6-3 on the year while Lackawanna improved to 2-3.

Delaney got off to a hot start with eight points in the first quarter, giving the Generals an early lead after hitting two free throws and then a layup in transition on back to back possessions.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter before a Chyna Wooten layup with less than thirty seconds remaining in the half gave the Falcons a 26-24 lead they would take into halftime.

Kyla Smith opened the scoring in the second half, drilling three pointers on consecutive possessions, however the Generals would not back down. Delaney hit two free throws before Jordan Meaurie-Pickett hit a deep three from the left wing to cut the Falcons lead to four at the end of the third quarter.

As the clocked ticked down late in the game, the offense picked up, with Pickett and Delaney carrying the load. Pickett hit an early bucket in the paint to make it a one score game, and Delaney did the same a few possessions later to tie the score at 57-57.

With just over four minutes remaining in the game, Jayda Allen got in on the action, hitting a runner from the free throw line while getting fouled. She would make the ensuing free throw, cutting the Flacons lead to 65-63.

The Generals ramped up the defensive intensity and with two minutes left in the game, forced turnovers on back to back possessions before Pickett hit another three from the left wing to tie the score at 69-69.

Lackawanna responded right away however, and Briaunna McCullough hit one of thwo free throws to extend the Flacons lead to 73-69 with 43 seconds left in the game.

Delaney answered right back with a quick layup, but it was McCullough again who answered the call for the Falcons, hitting a three pointer to give the Falcons a 76-71 lead with under thirty seconds on the clock.

With the defense keying on Delaney, Pickett stepped up for Generals with yet another three pointer with 15.6 seconds left to make it 76-74.

The Generals then sent McCullough to the free throw line, where she hit one of two to make it 77-74 with 12.5 seconds left.

Coming out of a timeout, the Generals put the ball in Delaney's hands looking for her to come off a high screen, but the Falcons jumped the screen and took the drive away. Delaney countered with a step-back three from deep on the right wing and found nothing but net with 5.7 seconds left to tie the game at 77-77 and send it to overtime.

Free throws were the name of the game in overtime, as both teams made their way to the charity stripe multiple times.Taylor-Rae Styles found her way to the free throw line on back to back possessions for the Falcons with an and one and a shooting foul, and made all three free throws to give Lackawanna an 85-79 lead.

Not to be outdone, Delaney and Pickett each found their way to the stripe for the Generals and cut the lead to 85-82 Delaney tied it up yet again with another big three.

A Shatoya Newine jumper from the left corner gave the Generals an 87-86 lead with under a minute to play, but Lackawanna answered again and took an 89-87 lead.

With 17.6 seconds left, Delaney found her way to the free throw line and hit both to tie the game at 89-89.

Unfortunately for the Generals, those would not be the last free throws of the game. With just 1.9 seconds remaining in overtime, Wooten went to the line for the Falcons. She missed her first shot, but connected on the second to give Lackawanna a 90-89 lead.

The Generals tried a full court shot as time expired, but to no avail.

Delaney led all scorers with 36 points, and Pickett finished with a career-high 24 points.

McCullough led the Flacons with 22 points. Styles finished with 21 points. The Flacons made 12 three pointers as a team.

The Generals are back in action Tuesday night as they take on Rockland Community College at home. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
